Franklin Delano Roosevelt was arguably the greatest figure of the twentieth century. While FDR’s official circle was predominantly male, it was his relationships with women–particularly with Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd–that most vividly bring to light the human being beneath this towering statesman. It actually is a history of all of the important women in FDR's life, including his mother, his cousin, his wife, his daughter, his secretary, and of course, the woman who was arguably the true love of his life/5.

I purchased this book after watching Ken Burns' masterful documentary "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History." I had to know more about FDR and the woman in his life, particularly his love affair and enduring relationship with Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd. Persico's book details Franklin D.

Franklin and Lucy is an extraordinary look at the private life of a leader who continues to fascinate scholars and the general public alike. Rutherfurd and the Other Remarkable Women in His Life,” which comes out next week, Joseph E. Persico suggests that the affair between Franklin Roosevelt and Lucy Mercer (later Rutherfurd), which was supposed to have ended inresumed even sooner than most scholars believed — indeed, that it may never have ended at all.

In Franklin and Lucy, historian Joseph E. Persico, the author of a previous book on FDR and World War II espionage (Ro osevelt's Secret War), is able to highlight their close friendship with the help of letters from FDR found in by Rutherfurd's grandchildren. The letters and other evidence, including phone logs, show that loving contact.
